Company Information: Horton, Inc., a global airflow industry leader in reliability, service and innovation has an opening for an Materials and Customer Service Manager to work in our Carmel, Indiana Corporate Headquarters


Position Summary: With general direction from the Carmel Director of Manufacturing & Corporate Director of Supply Chain, manages all aspects of Materials and Customer Service at the Carmel location, comprising:

  • Planning, purchasing, and inventory of materials
  • Production scheduling, shipping, and delivering on-time to customers
  • Local customer service & expediting requests
  • Supplier management & performance
  • Functional Improvement Initiatives / Projects




  1. Leads planning, purchasing, and inventory control of direct & indirect materials for the site.


      1.1    Drives advanced planning, using forecast information, to maintain appropriate inventory levels and direct materials orders on suppliers that support efficiency in production and on-time delivery to the customer.


      1.2    Reviews reports of current inventory levels established against inventory goals to ensure that inventory levels remain balanced to projected demand.


      1.3       In conjunction with sales, continuously improves forecasting system to be more accurate and efficient.


      1.4    Collaborates with site staff for planning & purchasing of indirect materials in most effective method.


  1. Manages production scheduling & shipping to maintain on-time delivery to the customer.


      2.1    Manages production scheduling processes & staff, using appropriate approaches & tools, to balance efficiency needs of production with the ability to sustain high on-time delivery to the customer.


      2.2    Leads shipping team and supports and receiving function, ensuring that material is received, stocked and issued to production areas in a timely basis.


      2.3   Ensures that all product shipped is properly packaged, documented, and duly recorded to meet financial requirements and minimize errors at the customer.


      2.4    Continuously improves, making changes to material flow & storage to make plant & warehousing operations lean.


  1. Manages the local customer service team, ensuring alignment with corporate customer service objectives.


      3.1    Provides training and work direction to department staff, checking work and providing performance management.


      3.2    Establishes work procedures, checking staff knowledge and use of procedures on a regular basis.


      3.3    Maintains daily contact with production areas in order to monitor product availability and to expedite orders as needed.


      3.4    Determines resolution for more complex issues of customer service including those that involve issuing credit memos for returned goods, errors, stock adjustments or other reason; consulting with accounting or senior management as necessary.


      3.5   In conjunction with corporate customer service, helps lead and facilitate

               continuous improvement activities in the Customer Service Department.


  1. Collaborates with Corporate Purchasing on supplier selection, assessment, & management.


      4.1    Develops standards of performance for suppliers including audits of deliveries, invoices, quality of parts and the supplier certification process.


      4.2    Develops and implements long-term strategic supplier relationships in order to create successful relationships that result in cost-competitive, on-time delivery of quality products and services.


      4.3    Provides direction to the process of selecting an optimum number of suppliers in order to balance healthy competition with the fostering of mutually dependent relationships.

      4.4    Establishes relationships with suppliers of the most critical components through personal meetings, in order to communicate mutual expectations of performance.


      4.5    Establishes an environment of idea sharing that involves suppliers in product development partnerships with design engineering staff.


      4.6    Provide leadership to reduce supplier lead-time while increasing their flexibility to support schedule changes.


  1. Collaborates with IT, Sales, Marketing & other Mfg Locations to maintain common & effective Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and other systems used to fulfill customer demand.


  1. Works with the Director of Manufacturing and the site leadership team in the development of strategic and tactical plans for the site & corporation.
  1. Monitors expenditures within the materials function and requires appropriate justification for expenditures, exercising sign-off authority on purchases as provided for in company finance and accounting procedures. Leads materials related capital projects as needed.


  1. Encourages, coaches, trains, provides communication, and completes other essential leadership duties for all employees reporting directly or indirectly. Completes required performance reviews and related documentation on staff members on an as need basis, minimum annually.






Base requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, business or equivalent
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in master scheduling, procurement, planning, warehouse management, commodity management, and/or production.
  • Strong familiarity with Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) SystemsPreferred requirements:
  • Experience as manager of people
  • 3+ years’ experience working in manufacturing environment
  • APICS CPIM Certification
  • Experience using Oracle MRP
  • Relevant industry exposure – on-road truck and/or off-road equipment OEMs
  • Lean or continuous improvement methodology training & experience


Must have legal authorization to work in the United States. Relocation allowance may be provided if the individual has all of the necessary qualifications.
